19 - we haven't had such a good response for the Sunday game in a long time. It must be general elections related. One more, and we have enough for a mini-tournament. We haven't had the old-style mini-tournament in a long time either - not since 27 June 2010, almost a year ago. If we get to 20 players, and if there is a clear majority in favour, we can have a simplified mini-tournament: First half hour: * Game 1 - Team A v Team B * Game 2 - Team C v Team D Second half hour: * Final: Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2 * 3rd/4th placing: Loser of Game 1 v Loser of Game 2 All games would be 5-a-side on a small pitch. .... the problem with 5 a-side is that no-shows are too penalizing it happened last time and it was not fun for the team which had to bear the shortfall and All the players down for today are reliable, so the risk of no show minimal, but we anyway don't have enough players for a mini-tournament, and the vote is 6-0 in favour of keeping it at 8-a-side. .... .... We might need to get to 24 (4 teams of 6).

The regular games are currently: * Mondays, 9 to 10 pm - The Cage * Tuesdays, 9 to 10 pm - Sports Planet * Wednesdays, 9 to 10 pm - Premier Pitch @ Khalsa * Thursdays, 9 to 10 pm - Premier Pitch @ Khalsa * Saturdays, 5 to 6 pm - Premier Pitch @ Turf City * Sundays, 5 to 6 pm - Premier Pitch @ Turf City .... The Premier Pitch @ Khalsa (for 6 or 7-a-side) and The Cage (for 4 or 5-a-side) are the preferred venues for extra games, as they are more central than our other regular venues, Sports Planet or the Premier Pitch @ Turf City. Also, the Premier Pitch @ Turf City, although covered, is more expensive, and the game there is harder to manage with less than 14 players. Extra games don't have a "track-record", so it takes more effort on my part to get enough players. 6 or 7-a-side at Khalsa is workable. Only a small proportion of our players are prepared to play at The Cage, and as the pitches are totally enclosed by walls/ceiling, it can be very stuffy during the day, and anytime before 8 pm.

Hi Rajiv,
I have only played at Turf City and am not familiar with the playing rules at the other venues. What are the rules for the other venues on playing to the lines or to the sides? Looks like the games at The Cage and Sports Planet play to the side but, from reading the postings, am not clear on Khalsa. Do the rules also change depending on the number of players (5 or 6-a-side versus 7-a-side)?
I for one prefer playing to the lines as it resembles the actual game so information on side vs line would be helpful.
Thanks

So far, all 6 or 7-a-side games at the Premier PItch @ Khalsa hve been played to the lines. More discussion here.

We seem to get offers for matches from time to time. I've referred to games where we play against another team as FIOFAFI/GIFFA as representative games. As I said before, I'm not looking to organize such games. Anyone who is interested, can use the "Other Games" board to organize such games. If I get involved, I tend to limit my role to booking the pitch and trying to get additional players if we are short of players. Exceptionally, I might get an opposing team to play against. Damian organized such a game last month. More recently: ... Sing Cher has his own Sun team and he had asked for a friendly a few weeks ago. .... ... for a scheduled game against another team, can we do it like last time - 4 to 5 pm, with team selection. 4 to 5 pm is not available the following week, but it is the week after (24 July). Let me know. Challenge matches were previously raised on the old blog as early as in April 2009. What I might do is keep a 4 to 5 pm booking at the Premier Pitch @ Khalsa on Sundays. Any two teams can use the booking to organize a match.

I'll further delay the mini-league. I'll start off with a Sunday Challenge match, and perhaps extend it to Thursdays. It will be easier to get the mini-league going after we've had several challenge matches involveing several teams.

No response for this Sunday. I might try to organize one in August.

Over the past couple of months, the Thursday night game at Khalsa has largely been David T and friends against the rest. Three of the last four Wednesday night games at Khalsa have been Fai and his relatives/friends against the rest. .... Trying to keep friends/relatives or players who are familiar with each other on the same team can distort the balance. Hopefully, as players get to know each other better, these factors will be less relevant. I'll consider designating at least one Wednesday night game and one Thursday night game each month as a "Challenge Match".

To try to make it easier to get extra games at Khalsa and Sports Planet going: * They will be $1 cheaper than regular games. * Limits on guests and putting names down for others will not apply. * There will be greater flexibility with line ups, so a group of friends can more readily form one team.

I've got the 8 to 9 pm slot tomorrow at Khalsa, and it's a challenge between David T's team and Elvin's team.
I've renamed the "7-a-side Mini-League" board under the "Men's Game" category as "Challenge Matches" and moved the thread for the challenge match to that board.
I'll try to get a few more of these going. It's a bit of a half-way house between our regular games and a mini-league.
For challenge matches, I'll only deal with the two persons putting together the two teams. Other than that the player putting together the team must be a registered regular, no distinction will be made between registered players and guests. The team co-ordinators decide on their teams, and collect payment from them. I'll just collect payment for each team from the team co-ordinators.

For tonight's challenge match: .... I'll show each of the above players having played in a game in the current balances spreadsheet. I'm not sure I'll do so for future challenge matches. I'm looking at the following for regular challenge matches: * 8 to 9 pm on Wednesday or Thursday nights at Khalsa. Unfortunately, neither are currently available. * 4 to 5 pm on Sundays at Turf City. Only available from October 2011 onwards. I'll see how it goes.

I'll use the Thursday 9 to 10 pm slot at Khalsa for a regular challenge match to see how it goes. David T and his friends anyway always want to play as one team, and there is also the 9 to 10 pm game at Sports Planet on Thursdays. Only put names down for the Khalsa game if you have a team of 7. Like the "Schedule" board, you have to be registered to post on the "Challenge Matches" board. If there is only one team, there will be selection for the opposing team from the individuals available. Individuals best put their names down for the Sports Planet game, but indicate whether you're available for the challenge match at Khalsa. Alternatively, you can send me a private message to let me know you're available for the challenge match. Best not to put individual names down on the chellenge match thread, as you may be "forced out" by a team of 7, or you may not be selected. Selection criteria - better team players who have played regularly at Khalsa, or on Thursday nights, or for whom Khalsa is a significantly more convenient venue than Sports Planet, and who inform me early of their availability, and the fit with the rest of the team, bearing in mind the strength of the other team. In the longer term, I'll try to give everyone interested in a challenge match chances to play. The restrictions on putting names down for others do not apply to a challenge match. Each person putting down a team of 7 is a team co-ordinator. The team co-ordinator pays for the entire team. How he collects from the rest of his team is up to him.

It slipped my mind that for this Thursday (8 Sep 2011), I only have the 10 to 11 pm slot. I'm only in reserve for the 9 to 10 pm slot. I don't know if I'll get it. I have 9 to 10 pm for all subsequent Thursdays. .... We had 13 for Sports Planet when it was posted as 9 to 10 pm, but only 3 for 10 to 11 pm, so the game at Sport Planet was cancelled. As for the challenge match scheduled for Khalsa, no one put a team down, nor did anyone indicate to me they were available, so I filled up the Khalsa game by SMS and those switching from Sports Planet, and switched it to a regular game. I think I'll keep challenge matches to an extra hour as originally planned, ideally, the hour before a regular game, at the same venue: * 8 to 9 pm at Khalsa on Wednesdays or Thursdays (if and when available). * 4 to 5 pm at Turf City on Sundays (when available). I'll leave the regular slots as regular games.
