Personally I find the 4pm slot more family-friendly that the 5pm slot.
After reaching home at 5 plus, there is still time for sports with the children before a leisurely preparation for dinner.
If it is a 5pm game, there is not much daylight left, and it will be dinner shortly. A bit rushed.

.... Accommodating a spillover might be easier with a later slot (6 to 7 pm) rather than an earlier slot (4 to 5 pm), but the extra slot that is available is 4 to 5 pm, so I'll leave it at that. The other consideration is whether I should schedule a 4 to 5 pm slot separately, and let numbers for the two slots fill up separately, rather than opening up the 4 to 5 pm only when the 5 to 6 pm slot fills up quickly, and there are several reserves. The numbers haven't been consistent enough for that, and if I open up two slots straightaway, and numbers are not enough for two games, I will have to collapse the two games into one. Then priority becomes a headache. I think yesterday worked out ok, and I will leave it like that until numbers for two games are more consistent. On the other hand, there are several players who prefer, or are only available, for the 4 to 5 pm slot. Also, the Saturday game has already reached 14 players in less than a day, so we may need an extra game over the weekend. I'll schedule an additional 4 to 5 pm game this Sunday. If there are not enough players for two games, they will be merged into one game from 5 to 6 pm. Priority will still be first come first in. All I need is for those who put their names down for the 4 to 5 pm game to indicate if they are available for 5 to 6 pm should the 4 to 5 pm game be cancelled. Players can put their names down for both games, but if they put their name down for the 4 to 5 pm game, they can only be in reserve for the 5 to 6 pm game. Also, once we reach 14 for either game, anyone else can only be in reserve. This is to allow both games to fill up. If both games fill up, and more want to play, we can go up to 16.

There have been no further games at Khalsa on a Thursday night, as the games on 8 December 2011 and 15 December 2011 were also cancelled due to insufficient players. Therefore, 6 out of the last 7 Thursday night games at Khalsa (dating back to 3 November 2011) have been cancelled, and only the game on 17 November 2011 went ahead, in the circumstances described above. Since 3 November 2011, 2 Thursday night games at East Coast have been cancelled - on 17 November 2011 and 24 November 2011. There was also no game at East Coast on 1 December 2011 (even though we had 14 players) due to a mix up over the booking, so for the second time in three weeks, there was no game at East Coast on Thursday. As a result, there was no Thursday night game at all on either 24 November 2011 or 1 December 2011. We've had 14 players for the Thursday night at East Coast on 8 December 2011 and 15 December 2011. For both games, we were stuck at 12 before two late additions brought us to 14. For the game on 15 December 2011, we managed to get to 14 despite David T and his friends withdrawing in the morning in order to play their regular game from 7 to 9 pm at Khalsa. .... I expect numbers to drop as we approach the end of the year, so games will be cancelled if we are short of players. .... I won't even schedule games for which there are clearly insufficient players, so I won't schedule Thursday night games at Khalsa until the new year. For those who want to play on Thursdays, there will still be the Thursday night games at East Coast, while for those who want to play at Khalsa, there is the Wednesday night game. In fact, the Wednesday night games at Khalsa have not been filling up: We've ended up with 6-a-side at Khalsa several Wednesdays now: * 19 October 2011 (Sivaraj got held up at work, so I sat out). * 2 November 2011 (Jamil was held up at work, so I sat out, until Murali got injured, and I came in for him). * 23 November 2011 (Babs and his friend withdrew late on) * 30 November 2011 (stuck at 13, and then John Simpson had to withdraw) .... Although we had 14 players on 7 December 2011, we again only had 12 for 14 December 2011. As for starting a Wednesday night game at The Cage: .... I've cancelled the bookings at The Cage for last night and next Wednesday. If numbers for Wednesday night at Khalsa don't hold up, I may switch the Wednesday night game to The Cage in December 2011. I won't try to run two games on a Wednesday night until sometime in the new year. As numbers for Wednesday night at Khalsa have been holding up, I cancelled The Cage bookings for 7 and 14 December 2011, and may cancel the bookings for the rest of the year. I will see how numbers are in the new year before deciding whether to cancel the bookings up to Chinese New Year.

Monday is a public holiday. .... I have switched the 4 to 5 pm booking at Turf City on Sunday, 25 December 2011, to Monday, 26 December 2011, 5 to 6 pm. .... As it has been difficult to fill places this week due to many either being away or having Christmas or end of year engagements, I have switched tonight's game from Khalsa to Kallang, as we can get by with 8 players instead of needing a minimum of 12. The weather is also a factor. For next week, as we have a game at Turf City on Monday, instead of trying to have two games on Monday and struggling to fill places for Tuesday to Thursday, I'll switch the Kallang game to Wednesday, and the Khalsa game to Thursday. The East Coast game on Thursday will be cancelled.

.... As it has been difficult to fill places this week due to many either being away or having Christmas or end of year engagements, I have switched tonight's game from Khalsa to Kallang, as we can get by with 8 players instead of needing a minimum of 12. .... In the end, we didn't have enough players even for Kallang, so the Wednesday game last week was cancelled. As the single Thursday night game was at East Coast, there was no Khalsa game last week. The Sunday game at Turf City was also cancelled as there were insufficient players, presumably because it was Christmas Day, while the game on the Monday public holiday went ahead from 5 to 6 pm at Turf City. .... The Wednesday and Thursday games went ahead as planned, with even players in reserve, even though we were stuck at one for the Thursday game until Tuesday night, and for a while, I considered switching the game to East Coast. For this weekend: Therefore, the games this long weekend, from 5 to 6 pm at Turf City, are on: * Saturday* Sunday* MondayBased on what happened last week, I expect at least two to go on. Likewise, the knock-on effect, as was the case this week, is that, next week, the Kallang game will be switched to Wednesday, and the Khalsa game will be confined to Thursday. However, for Thursday, I will schedule two games, one for Khalsa and one for East Coast. If there are not enough players for both games, one game will be cancelled, based on the usual principles. Overall, we're still managing 5 to 6 games per week over the Christmas/New Year period.

With reduced numbers over Christmas and New Year, and the modifications to the schedule due to two consecutive Mondays being public holidays, the Wednesday games have been affected. The game on 21 December 2011 was cancelled ( as we didn't have enough even for a game at Kallang), while the games on 28 December 2011 and 4 January 2012 were at Kallang instead of at Khalsa. However, we did manage a Thursday night game at Khalsa last week (29 December 2011), only the second Thursday night game at Khalsa since 28 October 2011. However, after the Thursday night Khalsa game was cancelled on Wednesday, there was a late sudden surge of numbers for the East Coast game, many of whom would have played at Khalsa. Although we might have had enough players for another Thursday night game at Khalsa, it was not to be, as the Khalsa pitch was no longer available by Thursday afternoon. We're back to the regular schedule from next week onwards. However, a couple of players have informed me that they will only resume playing after Chinese New Year, so games may still be affected until then.

Weekends & public holidaysWe've managed two games on Sunday at Turf City, one from 4 to 5 pm, the other from 5 to 6 pm, three times since July 2011 - 21 August 2011, 27 November 2011 and 11 December 2011. However, there was no game on either Christmas or New Year's Day, both of which fell on a Sunday. Both times, we made up for it by having a game at Turf City from 5 to 6 pm on the Monday public holiday. As stated in the post above, we didn't have the regular Monday night games at The Cage. The Chinese New Year holidays fell on Monday and Tuesday (23 and 24 January 2012). The game on Sunday, 22 January 2012 was brought forward to 4 pm. .... 4pm on Sunday may be more popular, as reunion dinners will be on Sunday. The game scheduled for the Tuesday public holiday from 5 to 6 pm at Turf City also went ahead. The regular games scheduled for the Monday night (at Kallang) and the Tuesday night (at East Coast) were both cancelled. If there is only one game on Sunday at Turf City, it is usually from 5 to 6 pm. However, the single game on Sunday, 5 February 2012, was switched to 4 to 5 pm to accommodate Jye, as he could only make the earlier time slot, while everyone else could make either. The single game last Sunday (12 February 2012) returned to the usual 5 to 6 pm. .... Anyway, only 7 can make 4 to 5 pm, while all 14 can make 5 to 6 pm. .... It has usually been the case that all can make 5 to 6 pm, while some can't make 4 to 5 pm. This Sunday (19 February 2012), the 4 to 5 pm slot is being used for the team match between Weekend Turf City regulars and Weeknight East Coast regulars. Weeknights.... ..., apart from the Wednesday night games that were switched to Kallang on 28 December 2011 and 4 January 2011 (5-a-side) or cancelled (on 21 December 2011), for one reason or another (mainly a late withdrawal or no show, with me sitting out), since 19 October 2011, several of the Wednesday night games at Khalsa ended up being 6-a-side - 19 October 2011, 2 November 2011, 23 November 2011, 30 November 2011, 14 December 2011, 11 January 2011, 18 January 2011. The last three Wednesday night games at Khalsa have however been 7-a-side - 25 January 2012, 1 February 2012 and 8 February 2012. We had a remarkable come back on 1 February 2012, and a good game on 8 February 2012. .... We actually had two reserves for the game last night (Wednesday, 15 February 2012) at Khalsa. As for Thursday nights at Khalsa: Since then: The game last night (Thursday) at Khalsa has also been cancelled due to insufficient players. .... We need a bigger pool of players to sustain two games a week at Khalsa, including some of those who haven't played for a while coming back. We're getting there. Since November 2011, the Thursday night game at East Coast has been far more regular than the Thursday night game at Khalsa. However, the game at East Coast on Thursday, 2 February 2012, was cancelled due to insufficient players. I don't know if Chap Goh Mei was a factor. However, we've not had a Thursday night game at East Coast only 5 times since 3 November 2011 - 3 cancellations, 1 mix up over bookings, and one not scheduled at all. It sounds like a great game at East Coast last night. The game at East Coast on Tuesday, 14 February 2012 was also cancelled due to insufficient players. A combination of injuries, illness, working late, and commitments for Valentine's Day (I presume ).

There are several threads that touch upon scheduling. .... .... I've moved the posts from the Weeknight games thread to the Weekend games thread. .... I've also renamed the thread "Days, times & locations". .... .... We now have separate threads on each of our regular venues except The Cage. .... The "Days, times & locations" threads will deal with trends in terms of the day of the days of the week and times for the games (with different considerations for weeknights and weekends), and venues. The threads for individual venues will deal with issues for that particular venue, so scheduling issues will be less of relevant. The "Filling places & choices" thread will deal with how places for each game are filled, especially for days when there are two slots available ( currently, Thursday and Sunday). The "Public holidays etcetera" thread deals with how public holidays and other special events or occasions of a public nature affect the schedule. This thread will deal with the system for scheduling games under the "Regular & Extra Games" and the "Team Matches" boards under the "Men's Games" category, and provide an overview. Men's games are dealt with more specifically under "Regular & other men's games". A lot of earlier posts on this thread deal with trending - I may or may not get round to moving them the "Days, times & locations" thread.

Since the schedule thread for the first weekend game in March 2012, I've been adding the following quote to the schedule threads for the weekend games at Turf City: .... [Premier Pitch @ Turf City] say that with the new head tenant, their rental will go up 350% from March 2012. Not only have the Turf City people increased their prices but they have reduced some of the small discounts I get for bulk booking and paying in advance. Their prices to me have gone up by 20 to 28%. With effect from 1 March 2012, I have to put up the price for games at Turf City by $2 per player. That's a 17% increase for the Saturday game and an 18% increase for the Sunday game, a lower percentage increase than Turf City's increase to me. That will be $14 per player for the Saturday game and $13 per player for the Sunday game (with effect from March 2012). There will be new pitches at Turf City over the next two to three months, which will be cheaper, but they will be uncovered, so they may not be suitable for afternoon/evening games at the weekend. It is no longer necessary, so I will leave it out for the weekend games from this Saturday (the first weekend game of May 2012) onwards.

Four weeks of school holidays start this weekend. Those with children in school may go on holiday or organize other activity with their children, so it could affect numbers. Games will be cancelled if numbers don't look good. The Monday night game has been cancelled. .... No names down, so game cancelled. .... I'm not sure it would be wise to schedule two games on any one day in June. For the two slots on Sunday at Turf City, its simply a matter of consolidating them into one game. For the two games on Thursdays, I might alternate between Khalsa and East Coast. As the Monday night game has been cancelled, I'll go ahead and schedule two games on Thursday, but if two games are slow to fill up, I will cancel one by Wednesday morning.

When putting your name down for a game on a schedule thread, or any time before the line ups are put up, please indicate against your name: * If you have only one of the two colours and would like to be in that colour. However, if you only have white, the team selectors may still put you in the other colour, as coloured bibs are available at all our regular venues. * If you are have an injury/illness which might affect your performance, but you still feel able to play. In such a case, you should of course first consider whether you should withdraw or switch to reserve, to allow someone else the chance to play. * Any other request or idiosyncrasy that might affect the line ups. When agreeing on line ups, team selectors do need to bear in mind: * The strengths, weaknesses, and idiosyncrasies of individual players. .... .... For the Saturday game, it extends to the number of beers you want after the game.

Other things to indicate when putting names down for a game: .... If a player doesn't want to be considered as team selector, please indicate against your name when you put your name down, or well before the poll closes. Opting out after the poll closes spoils the process. .... When putting the name down for another player, please indicate whether he will be paying on his own behalf or you will be paying for him. If it is left silent: * if the player has credit, I will deduct payment from his credit. * if the player has no credit, I will deduct payment from the credit of the player putting the name down. If you pay for another player, you can always collect from him at the game itself. If you are not playing, I suggest you do not put down names for others, unless you are sure payment arrangements have been made. For guest players, unless the player has previously paid for himself, I will look to the player putting the guest's name down for him for payment, even if he indicates the guest will pay for himself. .... For new or newer guests, the player should be on the same team as his introducer.

Since the start of March, the schedule thread for the Sunday game has included, under "Payment", the following quote: .... That will be $14 per player for the Saturday game and $13 per player for the Sunday game (with effect from March 2012). There will be new pitches at Turf City over the next two to three months, which will be cheaper, but they will be uncovered, so they may not be suitable for afternoon/evening games at the weekend. We've had this for a whole quarter now, so those affected should know this by now. For the games from next month onwards, I have simplified it. For the Sunday game, it will be "$13 for Sunday. This is $1 less than for Saturday." For Saturday game, the passage was only included for games in March and April. To be consistent with the Sunday game, from next month onwards, the schedule thread for the Saturday game will provide, under "Payment", "$14 for Saturday. This is $1 more than for Sunday". Where two games are scheduled under one thread (Sundays with both games at Turf City, and Thursdays with one game at Khalsa and one at East Coast), please specify either (with or without preference) or only one. For Sundays, with both games at Turf City, "both" is also an option, although those who make themselves available for both will only be in reserve for the second game.

.... I've been keeping a record of games per week (initially just for weeknight games) on this thread since February/March 2012, roughly on a monthly basis. From this week onwards, I will keep track of this on the "Scheduling" thread instead. I've renamed this thread "Scheduling & games per week". Regular games are scheduled 5 days beforehand, in the morning, ie: * Saturday game(s) are put up on Monday morning. * Sunday game(s) are put up on Tuesday morning. * Monday game(s) are put up the previous Wednesday morning. * Tuesday game(s) are put up the previous Thursday morning. * Wednesday game(s) are put up the previous Friday morning. * Thursday game(s) are put up on Saturday morning. We have never had Friday games (other than on public holidays), and a regular Friday night game is still some way away. Extra games are put up up to 7 days beforehand. Extra games are games that are scheduled as and when required. Extra games which are intended to become regular games are likely to be put up 6 days before hand. I have been putting up the thread for the two new games, Sunday night at Indian Association and Tuesday night at Turf City, 6 days beforehand, that is, on Monday and Wednesday respectively. However, the first game scheduled for Indian Association on 16 September 2012 was somewhat impromptu, and was only put 3 days beforehand. The first Tuesday night game at Turf City was scheduled this week. So far, none of the new games have gone ahead, but I haven't really been trying very hard. It takes players a while to get used to a new slot. Although, from next week onwards, I am moving the Kallang game from Monday night to Tuesday night, I will continue to put it up on Wednesday, until it has stabilised.

Previously, on "Players & records": .... I've also taken a look at the number of games per month since I first started keeping monthly records, a change brought about by the introduction of prepayment: January 2011 - 20 games February 2011 - 18 games March 2011 - 23 games April 2011 - 21 games May 2011 - 20 games June 2011 - 23 games July 2011 - 24 games August 2011 - 27 games September 2011 - 29 games October 2011 - 28 games November 2011 - 26 games December 2011 - 25 games January 2012 - 26 games February 2012 - 25 games March 2012 - 21 games April 2012 - 24 games May 2012 - 29 games June 2012 - 27 games This includes all men's games, both regular games and team matches. We've averaged 4.5 games more in the first 6 months of 2012 compared to the first 6 months of last year. August to October are usually the peak months, as was the case in 2011. Continuing: July 2012 - 27 games August 2012 - 25 games September 2012 - 25 games October 2012 - 24 games November 2012 - 27 games A bit of a dip in October, as we faced more "competition" from more non-GIFFA midweek games at Turf City, but I think we've moved beyond that. I understand that since the start of October, they've had a big covered pitch for Monday night as well. I'll continue to monitor the number of GIFFA games each month under this thread, so I'll rename it "Scheduling & games per week/month".

Games per week in December 2013, into the new year: * 1 to 6 Dec 2012: 7 games - Basic 1 per day from Saturday to Wednesday, and 2 games on Thursday. * 8 to 13 Dec 2012: Basic 6 games, with the game on Thursday was at Khalsa. * 15 to 20 Dec 2012: Basic 6 games, with the game on Thursday at Khalsa. * 22 to 27 Dec 2012: With Christmas Day on the Tuesday, 3 games only - one each on Saturday, Sunday and Thursday. The Thursday game was at Khalsa, so no East Coast game that week. * 29 Dec 2012 to 3 Jan 2013: With New Year's Day on the Tuesday, 5 games - one each on Saturday and Sunday. Extra game on the Tuesday evening at Turf City. Two games on Thursday. For the Christmas/New Year period: .... .... What was surprising was that there were no games on both Wednesdays, the working day after the public holiday. However, we had night games at Khalsa on both Thursdays, with no East Coast game at all in the week of Christmas. 24 games in December 2012, down 1 from the 25 in December 2011. 304 games in 2012, up from 284 games in 2011.

Modes of payment are set out under the "Current balances & payment information" thread on the "Payment Information" board" under the "Administration & Overview" category. Line Ups, Punctuality & Previous GamesProposed line ups will be put up a few hours before the game. If there are an odd number of players, the proposed line ups may be delayed until we have an even number of players. Those playing, please be early, to warm up and meet the other players. Even though a specific colour may be assigned to each player before the game, please bring both a white top and a red top. If you have played over the past week, please add your comment on the report thread. Comments will be taken into account in future line ups. The one for Thursday, 31 January 2013 had the modified old one, slightly longer to address the two games scheduled for Thursday.
