Whites: Jessen, Brendan, Charles, Babs (ts), Wilson L, David T, Derian Q Reds: Justin R, Kenji, Kelvin Han, Chen Hong (ts), Andrew B, Hail, John Simpson
I didnt think Whites were too strong, I only thought Whites seemed to have more offensive players whilst Reds seemed to have more defensive players so I thought it would be an offence vs defence evening.
Anyway, the game got underway and Whites were quicker off the blocks due to their warm up earlier and got a 2-0 lead. Reds were trying to slow the game down and to get their positional play and passing steadier, whilst Whites seem to take their foot off the pedal with a steady lead and dominating start. However, forgot who let fly a rasping shot that Wilson could only palm into the net (he was dreaming anyway). And 2-1! Reds were given that motivational boost and were pushing forward! They got the equalizing goal to make it 2-2. Reds were growing in confidence and it was obvious the lack of stamina in Whites were beginning to show. Whites dug deep to score a third goal but Reds matched the exploits to level the score. Both sides were putting on defensive determination but some neat passing interchange led to Whites scoring the fourth goal. Reds tried hard but were caught out when a long ball was sent forward to Babs who calmly placed the ball into the back of the net. With Whites tiring a lot more, a late foot injury to Brendan ended the game at 5-3, ending Reds never-say-die attitude.
Pls regard David's report. This one has all the real facts :
Whites: Jessen, Brendan, Charles, Babs (ts), Wilson L, David T, Derian Q Reds: Justin R, Kenji, Kelvin, Chen Hong (ts), Andrew B, Hail, John Simpson
Justin arrived early since we all knew that the core team for the Whites were practising 2 hrs before the game. He SMSed me to come early to discuss tactics & spy on the Whites. Since its only my 2nd time playing at Khalsa I missed the turning in CTE & went to PIE instead - this made me arrive flusttered & didnt pay attention to Justin's pre-match team talk.
We knew we were in trouble as Babs came out wearing a Red England top, Arsenal short skirt & full length PJ style tights & dragon insignia boots. Further confusion arose when Andrew B came in as a last min sub - at this point Justin had to tear his pre-match tactics notes to shreds as the plan was to play Kodata as point man since Rajiv so highly touted him to us.
As the rest of the Reds limbered onto the pitch the Whites were still showing off on the next pitch via back flicks, bicycle kicks & step overs. I am not talking about what Wilson, Derian & David were doing with a football but a pack of cigarette !
Justin had no issues with the floodlights but did say a few words regarding the size & weight of the ball. He tried to negotiate a 2.5 handicap from David but David said this had to be done prior via Rajiv.
Whites started with Derian as lone frontman & David marshalling midfield. Their 2 token angmos Brendan & Charles were on both flanks. Babs & Wilson were protecting David as their team pour forward. Jessen claimed he has stomach cramps so played goalie.
Justin started in goal as he usually takes 15 min to warm up. Hail & Kenji were employed as twin strikeforce as pre-match notes from Justin is that Whites are an ageing team with more flair in attack which may leave spaces behind. John Simpson had a free roaming role on the right flank & Andrew was tasked to pull all the strings together through midfield. Kelvin could do whatever he wanted.
True to form Derian troubled the Reds backline as myself & John struggled to keep him in check. Soon Derian & David put Whites 2-0 up with ease !
Reds were slow to get into the game as we struggled to control the ball - which was one size too big & a few grams too light. Plus the bright yellow color was distracting. Kelvin, Kenji & Andrew were playing off tight triangles on the left but couldnt break through Babs & Brendan. The bigger ball easily getting caught betwen Babs legs !
The ball hardly went to the Whites half & Jessen as goalie even had time to change to a fresh set of clothes ! At 2-0 up complacency crept into Whites' game as David & Derian took to juggling once again. They wanted to light up but was reminded that this is a non-smoking facility.
On one of the rare forays upfield i got the ball from John S & tried to pass the ball into the opposing D - Wilson was kind enough to palm the ball into the net !
Score remained at 2-1 with Whites pouring for more & if not for both the D's kindness & graciousness they could have been easily 4 or 5 up. Then from a defensive move I saved a tame shot from David by attempting to clear but the ball went straight to the opposing half with Hail rounding their keeper to equalise !
This really got Whites upset. Babs led the angmos to a sit-in protest against the locals but was persuaded back to the pitch. There was some off field distraction & it was at that moment that David sneaked a shot into goal with the goalie out of position. What cheats !
Again Reds were pinned back but refused to be beaten. Andrew came up with the goods as he sent a through pass down the left & the ball was crossed into the D. A sliding finish from John S brought the game on level. Tireless John what a man !
Game was tied 3-3 to almost the end. Whites were tiring & resorted to pumping the ball over the Reds defences. On one of those forays David chipped the ball to the right. Babs was behind me & I distinctly heard him say 'leme have it Gooner' which I then ducked. It was an exact copy of Van Persie's goal against Liverpool ! Easily goal of the season material !!
That goal took the energy out of the Reds as we were beaten into submission. However we ended with our tails up as we restricted Whites to only 5-3 meaning they didnt clear the bookie's 2.5 handicap.
