Final score was 3-1. It was actually a finely balanced game eventually defined not so much by skills or class but rather a tale of 2 blunders. I thought a 1-1 scoreline would have been fair.
The Whites started the game well, stringing a series of short neat passes probing at the Red's defence. However the ever improving Desmond in his commanding centre back position, marshalling Tim T and Chen Hong in the full backs position made the Red's goal impregnable. There was also quite a bit of wasteful finishing on the part of the Whites as they failed to convert their chances during their period of dominance in the first 20 min.
On a fairly harmless fast break down the left flank, Bernard sent in a low cross into the Whites penalty area without a Reds attacker in sight. In an inexplicable moment of madness, Xiongwei decided to flick the ball towards the GK from all of 0.6 yards from goal!?!? As expected the move completely flabbergasted Arjit and trickled into the net. Whites pressed hard for an equaliser and pressed hard up the field. Preying on a weak throw out from the Reds keeper, Lynz stole the ball fed the ball across goal for a tap in by Kien to tie the game at 1-1. The relief from the whites was short lived as poor defending from a corner allowed Fred to perform an acrobatic backheel which lacked power but still somehow managed to drift into the far post.
With about 20 min or so left, Lynz had to limp off injured and Jason from the Reds decided to quit the game early as well. leaving us to continue a 7 a side game. Whites formation and tenacity in attack was adversely affected with the edge that Lynz provided and despite some hard running and Herculean effort from Richard, Brendan and Jye pushing for an equaliser the goal just never came. Nearing the end of the game, Xiongwei deep in his half decided to perform a superfluous step over versus the marauding Babs. It turned out to be a poor decision as Babs stripped him like a Patpong hooker and slotted the ball into goal for an unassailable 3-1 lead to finish the game.
It was a good run out and great effort from both teams. I think Tim T and Nick deserve special mention for an excellent performance in both attack and defence. i was particularly disappointed that Nick in goal saved against me in a one on one situation after a smooth fastbreak play from the White's defence. He was big, brave and quick off his line!!!
At our age, precautionary measures have to be taken for knocks to prolong playing... Probably need to change my style of playing to last longer. I do notice that the Sat games are getting a bit more physical, nothing malicious... just players wanting to win the ball a bit more. Just need to be a bit more sensible on the challenges given the mixed of young and older players.
