There was some concern on the WhatsApp group chat from a couple of players on Team 2, but they were up to trying it out. I made one switch to try to bring the average ages of both sides closer, and as a result, the captains have been changed. The earlier version was replaced above. I also extended the time from 2 pm to 2.30 pm. No further colours, so I'll go ahead and assign colours.
Whites: Wing Kong, Martijn, Andrew Y, Edmund T, David T, Kydd, Kenny, Derian (c) Reds: Tan Wee, Damian Y, Gerard N (c), Anthony G, Ben Horn, Danny Lien, Dave H, Sushil
If it starts raining, give yourself more time to get to the game on time.
Though initally there were some murmurings of Whites being v strong with the trio of Kydd, Martijn and David spearheading the attack, things settled to a comfortable tempo almost from the get-go.
Reds had the first shot on goal through its Captain Gerard who played the lone striker upfront again (after his heroics last Sun). But it was White team who scored first, courtesy of a soft goal which was let in by yours truly after a shot from outside the box by Martijn was stopped by me but somehow dribbled into the goal (sorry guys). But Gerard made it 1-1 soon after.
Whites then had a really good spell for the next 20 mins and this was exacerbated by Reds rather sloppy passing in Def leading to much possession for the Whites. Andrew, Martijn, Kydd, Derian and David all found themselves with space in the penalty area of the Red goal but for some reason, they were only able to raise the score to 3-1.
I am not sure who made the call on the Reds side or if it was coincidental but a few moves into goalie brought about a change in the formation with Tan Wee going into center mid (wasted to have him as right back anyways), with Anthony G dominating both the right and left flanks and Ben coming into the center as well. With the midfield beefed up, Dave H got plenty of the ball with his running and suddenly it was 3-2 and all to play for.
Near to the 45 mins mark, Reds were in ascendancy with attacking play from the flanks, 1 of which was crossed across the the goal but alas no Red player was there....fortunately, we had Kenny who as a result of a miscommunication with goalie Andrew, just managed to get a touch on the wayward cross to tip it over Andrew into the goal!! 3-3!!!
Reds were now revitalised and motivated to win the game. This spurred much more committed running and tackling by Ben, Anthony, Tan Wee and Dave in the front and their efforts paid off with the 4th and winning goal coming late via a really nice shot from Anthony outside of the D.
The match ended 4-3 to Reds. Nice Sun afternoon game played with traditional Giffa good spirits and not much drama.
I thought Whites played some beautiful football working space very well and had pretty good movements. I thought Reds suffered a lot throughout the whole game and in the end we won through some real committed running and chasing back. On the balance, I thought Whites were the better team but probably overpassed in the Arsenal way while we were more direct. Good game overall.
