Whites: Gerard (c), Steven Lim, Martijn, Alvin Chew, Tom E, Wayne H, John J Reds: Kien, Derian (c), Mark Li, Wilson, Chern Yang, Kelvin Ho, Isaac
It was a game of friends vs strangers with whites consisting largely of players who haven't played with each other before and reds with two groups of friends. Derian n friends and kien n friend.
No fuss on the team selection as boss rajiv helped in making the decision on who to play on which team. Not too much fuss either at the start of the game other than wilson being a little late and also, not forgetting, the major jam at the parking area at khalsa and csc. As a result I had to park illegally right outside the main gate outside of khalsa.
So the game got under way, 5 min into 9pm. Whites quickly got into beat with flowing moves from defence to attack with some crisp passes and interchange. They definitely did not seem like strangers playing with one another.
It was reds, or I should say, pink, that drew first blood. Derian, in his pink polo, dancing past two defenders before slotting the ball coolly into the bottom right corner. As a result of that, john n team were demanding him to change to pure red as he was confusing them.
So after some friendly argument and a change of jersey, the game shortly resumed.
Reds went on again to score a second goal after some confusion in defence saw Derian, wide open in a one v one situation and again, he put the ball into the other bottom corner with deadly accuracy.
After 2 sucker punches, Whites finally got some luck of their own. Their short passing play managed to exploit the usually effective pairing of Chern Yang and Mark and they quickly got back to level terms with goals coming from John and Martijn. Both of these international imports were instrumental in leading the charge for whites.
The score took a complete 180 degree turn and whites found themselves in the lead soon after. Wilson was a disaster for reds in defence and in goal, single-handedly handing the lead to whites with at least 3 fumbles. He was either passing the ball straight to his opponents or just hitting the ball straight at his team mates, which then trickled to his opponents' feet for an easy sitter. It was 8-6 towards the end of the game, in favour of whites.
Reds had horrible night and even though they ended up having more defensive players, they still found themselves more wanting in defence. Whites, on the other hand, had an exemplary night. Martijn had a couple of really memorable goals from distance and John was bursting his lungs down both flanks. Gerard was at his usual brilliance, with some really smart play, linking up the midfield and attack. Wayne commanded the defence really well and all in all, it was a good team win for whites.
