As Dom and Gerard have put three names down each, I suggest that they be team selectors. Also, they are the two players with the most number of games in the current 6 month period, 32 and 31 respectively.
Hold back line ups until 1 pm tomorrow, in case there are any withdrawals.
It was another nice Sunday game. Damian and others were worried about the strength of the Reds but Gerard gave us comfort it would be balanced. And actually the Whites appeared stronger. We had some good build- up between Rock star and Tim in the back which did not allow the Reds to pressure. Whenever they did, it opened room in midfield or a long pass. On the other hand, with the energy of Zach, and either Derian or Gerard upfront the Reds never had an easy build- up which made it difficult. Whites scored first with a typical short distance finish by Gerard and went up 2-0. Reminder had a great goal from far away when the ball fell to his feet. Darren had his usual good runs and we played solid as a team. Derian and Gerard switched between being goalie and forward and that gave us energy upfront. It became 5-1 and the game opened up. Reds tried to pressure and Whites had many chances but wasted them. Tan wee had a terrific header to put the final score at 5-2. Reminder, again apologies to having kicked you on the shin trying to poach the ball.
I confess that I felt White team to be weaker after looking at the firepower of the Reds with Raminder, Imran, Kelvin and Ganesh etc ...very attack oriented side.
However Gerard reassured us pre-match that we had a balanced side and we could take them so we started off with the motto "Have some Faith!" I have to say that Whites win involved some careful strategising on our part....we knew that it would be futile to try to control the very strong Red midfield especially with many Red players who could hold the ball well....so we decided to park Tim and Raj and myself in Def hardly going up at all (kudos to the Def who held the discipline very well) and they pretty much snuffed out everything that Reds threw at us. Ram's first goal was a powerful shot from outside the box!
The next part of the strategy was an absolute joy to watch as I never thought we could pull it off, the Long Ball! With Raj's pinpoint accuracy and Gerard's fox in the box movement, there were many occasions when a single pass from Raj to Gerard by-passed the entire Red midfield and even defence (G likes to sit deep) and resulting in splitting the entire Red defence.
But a lot has to be said for the Red's fighting spirit as after the 2nd goal, you could see they were all fired up and they launched wave after wave of attacks pushing everyone up. Whites def was sorely tested as Ganesh and Kelvin and Imran all pushed forward with abandon.
Fortunately we managed to cling on till 5mins past the hour as Raj had to rush for an appt. Game played in good spirits and though there were some mistimed kicks etc, there was no retaliation and everyone played in good spirits.
