Late afternoon showers turned out to be a blessing as it cooled the temperatures and lowered the humidity. The downside was that the ball tended to skid away at times over the slightly damp pitch....
The game started out evenly although some felt that on paper Reds was the stronger team. Reds led by a goal each time till the score was 3-3 with James banging in most of Reds' goals. Whites defended very well and were dangerous on the counter attacks.
Somehow after 3-3 Reds lost their shape. Through some rather sloppy defending and comical goalkeeping errors Reds gave away 3 goals. Reds were unlucky to hit the woodwork several times but solid defending by Whites and quick counter attacks gave Whites the edge.
Unfortunately with ten minutes to go Neil twisted his ankle and Whites were down to six men. Jeff scored a beautiful header but took Gilbert down who collapsed to the ground gasping for breath. Amazingly in his delirious state the first question he asked was "Was that a goal?"!
With Whites down to 5 men, Jeff defected to play for the Whites but Rai finished off the Reds with the last goal to end the game with a score of 7-4 in favour of the Whites.
Btw - turf looks new after the heavy downpour too.
Agreed with Jeff. I think the rain actually help held those irritating black bits together and made it less slippery and smoother to play.
Amazing individual effort and teamwork from each of the Whites. Don't think anyone was optimistic of our chances when we huddled up for pre match tactics as bluntly summed up by Gilbert
Special mention to Neil and Philip who were relentless in their marking/defending of James and even found the extra motivation to venture up front with their overlapping runs. Glenn F & Song worked their socks off rotating the "false no.9" role with their tireless running and closing down on the Reds players from the top. Ben took awhile to settle down after arriving 5 mins late but kept his focus and could even easily scored an hat trick if he had taken his chances from point blank range. Gilbert was as usual .. Solid as a ROCK!
Happy to hit 6 goals last night but even more ecstatic on the manner we earned the win, especially when we were playing with 6 towards the end of the game. I think we won 8-5.
Good game Rai....your goals alone were enough to sink us!
A special mention on Ryan who introduced some youth into the team. At the age of 16, apart from bringing the average age of the Reds down (with 2 oldies in the team) his tireless running showed glimpses of Giggs, or shall I say, Januzaj. Hope to see him more often...maybe with his Dad?
Bert, hope your right breast has normalised...offer of breast implants still there.
