Whites, under Rainer's leadership elected to with an unorthodox 3-4-0, with Rainer being the false #9 in the centre. The strategy was to pack midfield and not to give their ball-carriers (no pun intended) time on the ball, notably Lynz and Brendan especially.
Despite Reds going up early in the first half, that tactic seemed to work.
I can't remember who scored for Reds (Brendan?) - but before you could say "good goal", Rockstar shouted "park the bus!"
From then on, it was 5 men in defence (in their box) for the Reds almost throughout the game. They relied on quick counters, and punts to Fred and Christian (both of whom held the ball up very well while awaiting support).
Whites had most of the possession, and played (frustratingly) like Arsenal at times, looking for the perfect pass into a very crowded Red's penalty box - yours truly guilty as charged. It didn't help that it was near impossible to find any white (no pun intended) forwards behind Rockstar's 3 double decker buses.
In the dying ambers of the game, Kelvin pulled one back after some intricate work on the left between Sam and Rainer. A low hard drive through about 20 people in the box, ended up fortuitously in the net.
We were mostly knackered by then, and some wanted to call time. Whites sensing that they were on the cusp of something, asked for 5 more minutes.
A quick roll out from the keeper (me) found Jason on the right. His cross was met by the onrushing Rainer (I think!!) - and made it 2-1.
One of the closest and tightest games for a while. At times it looked like defence versus attack. Good fun. And I didn't wear blades today.
great pleasure to be back for the sat game! last week, my body was in pain for full 4 days but it's all worth it.
whites seemed to struggle a bit at the beginning and ran into a textbook counterattack from reds. believe, fred put it away for reds. then whites found their rhythm and it turned into a high quality fight. both teams gave it all and while whites dominated possession reds remained very dangerous with their quick counters. last goal - deep into extra time - was scored by Richard, if I remember correctly. but as rockstar's report suggests there were a few guys in the box and I think the shot was deflected also.
big thanks to all white players for sticking with a somehow unorthodox formation and make it work!
Great tight game and contrast in styles and tactics with the Whites playing a passing, probing possession style of football dominating the ball but struggling to get through against a fast direct counter attacking approach from the Reds.
Thanks Sam for the Beers although a slightly dubious selection
