Numbers were stuck at 8 or 9 for a long time - every time I got one more, I had one withdrawal. I was just aiming to get to 10, so that we could play on the small pitch at least.
A sudden surge in the afternoon got us to 14 - we actually had enough for 7-a-side on the big pitch!
However, an hour before, Varun SMSed me to say he was down with the flu. One thing I've raised before - if you have the flu, shouldn't you know by early afternoon, not late afternoon? Anyway, I thought we could pick up an extra player from the earlier game, so we went ahead.
Tomo was late, and the earlier game was still going on with Ace in it, so we started 6 v 5 on a small pitch which happened to be vacant, as follows:
Whites: Daniel L2, Justin, Ganesh, Kimberley, Charlie, See Kit
Reds: Rajiv, Rainer, Vincent, Wade, Salman
Rainer got the scoring started with a great goal, for Reds to lead 1-0. Tomo arrived shortly after, and we were kicked off the small pitch which was booked by another group, so we moved over to the big pitch which was booked by us, as the earlier game came to an end.
Vincent switched over to Whites, while Tomo and Ace came in for Reds:
Whites: Daniel L2, Justin, Ganesh, Kimberley, Charlie, See Kit, Vincent
Reds: Rajiv, Rainer, Wade, Salman, Tomo, Ace
7 v 6 on the big pitch. I continued the score from earlier, ie, with Reds leading 1-0.
As Ace had played the earlier game, he started in goal and stayed there for quite a while, doing well to cut out Whites counter-attacks. Nevertheless, Whites took a 2-1 lead before Reds came back to lead 4-3.
Sunny, who had also played the earlier game, then came in for Reds for the last 20 minutes. Chances were created at both ends, with Ganesh and Justin making some great saves for Whites, while Whites went close several times.
Wade didn't bring his scoring boots, and missed a few great chances, as Whites took a 5-4 lead. Rainer scored a last-minute equaliser, for the game to finish 5-5.
A good start to the 6 to 7 pm slot.
