The match ended 2-0 in favour of the Reds. It was a rare clean sheet to be kept by any team in a GIFFA match but it was a deserved one as the Reds produced one of the most disciplined and controlled performance in recent memory for the regular Sat game. It was by no means a one sided drubbing of the Whites but the tempo and flow of the game was always dictated by the Reds today.
Reds Captain Bab deserves much of the kudos for a brave and creative lineup which saw Lynz starting as CB and the evergreen Raj, galavanting in the middle of the park stringing passes and bossing the midfield. The solid reds back line marshalled the obvious danger man, Rainer very tightly which resulted in a highly frustrating and fruitless game for him despite his relentless running. Arjit, who in my opinion is one of the most in-form defender at the moment, was rock solid and challenged imperiously for every lose ball and made a lot of preemptive interceptions. Therefore the main attacking threat of the Whites was reduced to long distance speculative attempts on goal. It was a strategy that almost paid dividends as the frame of the goal was rattled on two occasions.
Around the half hour mark tidy and tight passing between the Red attackers jan, christian and Gerard produced a quality goal despite some valiant attempts to by Foo Cheong to keep the ball out. The Reds pressed on to extend their slender lead. Due credit must be given to the Whites for not giving up and the new players Glenn and Chris showed good touches and a great fighting spirit as they kept the Reds at bay and never gave up the fight!
However in the dying minutes of the game, jan nicked the ball off the toe of the defender and coolly drove the ball low and hard into goal for an unassailable 2-0 lead. As usual, it was a great work out and the game was played in good spirits.
It was a really enjoyable & tight game, the 2 new players were good strong players and both teams were closely matched. I have to say the discipline and work rate showed by all 8 red players was absolutely class. Everyone played their part in getting a clean sheet & defensively it was possibly the best performance I have seen from a Giffa team, Arjit, Lynz, & CH/Gerard were so solid. Raj was controlling the midfield and linking with me, Christian and jan really well. 2 lovely goals from jan were the difference esp the first where he waited for the keeper to commit himself and go to ground before dinking it over his body!
