Final score was 5:3 in favour of the Whites. It was an intense, nail biting, end to end affair that was finally clinched by the irrepressible Whites with an avalanche of 5 goals in the last 20 mins!!!
The line ups were actually quite even. The possession of the ball stats would probably be able 50/50. However the Reds deservedly lost the game based on 2 decisive factors: 1) calamitous defensive errors; and 2) wantonly wasteful finishing from the attackers. The perfect combo to lose a football match!?!? When the match started, the balance of play was quite even with both sides very cavalier in attack and looking to draw first blood. However, within 30 min the WHites had raced to a seemingly unassailable 3 nil lead courtesy of 1) a GK error where a hopeful high ball was flapped into goal; 2) a botched standard clearance in the penalty area was skewed to the foot of an onrushing opponent and; 3) collective ball watching by the Reds as Sam slid a diagonal pass to an unattended Fred waiting at the far post of an open goal.
At this point the game looked dead and buried for the Reds, to their credit they never gave up. In truth the Reds were always threatening and created much more goal scoring chances than the scoreline might have suggested. With all due respect to the Red attackers, it was one of the most profligate display of woeful finishing collectively in history of recent GIFFA games. Numerous one-on-one opportunities and open goal invitations were left unpunished for the better part of 45 mins. However just past the 45 min mark, the Whites managed to pull a goal back and it galvanised the team as the Reds began to tire. Suddenly within 10 mins, the game was all tied up at 3-3 with a brace of quick fire goals! At this point, it looked as if the Reds could ride the momentum and do a smash-n-grab to edge out a win. However deep into injury time, a well worked corner from Jan found Jye unmarked outside the box and the latter performed a brilliant one time finish to tuck the ball just inside the post of the goal. The Whites were back in the lead. Reds made again attempt to push up for a late equaliser but that left gaping holes in the back line and they were duly punished with a fast break by the WHite attackers with the last kick of the game.
It was a good workout played out in good sportsmanship. looking forward to next week guys!
Breathless just from reading your match report CH. Good advert for the Saturday game. Maybe that's why it's filled up already on a Monday morning. Special mention for Jye's goal. Good enough to win a cup final. Good week all.
