Feels like a presidential before the game. A last minute casting of votes saw some of the other players out maneuver the regulars 'pals' group. In the end the two players, Daniel and Derian got the highest votes to become captains of whites and reds respectively.
White's line up looked a bit faster and definitely the fitter of both sides. The deciding factor was probably going to be whether reds can effectively shut out the twin terrors of Jacko and Daniel who had both skills and pace between them to break down the toughest of defences.
Reds lined their team up by starting jessen and wilson, the AGD (ambiguously gay duo) as full backs. Chern Yang, as always, marshalled the defence in the center. The whole strategy was to soak and laugh counters, hoping to catch whites on the break. Reds got their noses ahead, courtesy of a goal from jessen on the left after a goal line scramble led to him tapping into am empty goal.
The scoreline stood at that for the longest time, thanks to some resolute defence from reds. Through a lucky break and miscommunication from reds gk and center back saw daniel pounce onto a loose ball to poke the ball past naz. That led to a bit of an internal squabble between red, but they still managed to get the game going again. Reds again went ahead. This time round with two goals coming from kelvin and Chern yang, a goal apiece. It seemed like the tactics were working well for reds. But reds, just like in past games, started to tire and gave whites most of the possession. The empty spaces vacated by reds were well taken advantage of by their speedier players, Jacko and Daniel. Wilson presented a sitter to whites and they punished reds to bring it back to 3-2. That also proved to dampen reds spirit and lifted whites hopes as they went on to score another 2 to make it 4-3 to whites.
One of the goals, worthy of mention, came from Gow. Keeping his eye on the ball the whole time from a floated corner, he timed his volley to perfection as the ball never left from the ground as it powered past the goalies hands into goal. The space he had to time that volley however showed how much reds had tired from the intense defending.
Reds managed to pull another goal back at the death to make the score 4-4. The final whistle was blown and both sides continued to play on for another 15 minutes. A few missed chances from reds later, whites launched one last foray into reds defence. A saved shot fell to a well placed attacker from whites who finished the game and finished reds hopes of winning.
Overall, the game turned out to be a really tight and tactical affair. Whites had most of the possession as they were having the fitter and faster players. They also had the players who could pass around in defence while reds sat back mostly in their own half to soak the attacks. Whites also had the players to press reds high up the pitch and thks prevented them from playing the ball around and had to resort to long balls for their counters. All in all, it was a very competitive affair. A few red players were heard complaining of niggling injuries picked up from such an intense game.
