Whites: Derian, Daniel, ChernYang, Kelvin Ho, Ray, Naz, Alex Reds: Gerard, Sean, Nick, Marcus, Kien, Gow, Andy
After a long hiatus, Gerard made his Wednesday Khalsa comeback as captain. Whites captain seemed to have taken advantage of his lack of familiarity with some of the newer players, and on paper, Whites looked much stronger.
From the start to end, Reds adopted a Stoke City (under Tony Pulis) style of play, packing their defence and pumping long balls to their strikers.
It started well as a cross-cum-shot long ball from Gow flew straight into goal. Whites equalised from a defensive mix up. The teams exchanged punches to 2-2 before Reds took the 4-2 lead.
Whites come back to 4-4. Reds made it 6-4 before the game ended 7-5 to the Reds.
Reds converted their chances and defended resolutely (Kien and Gow at the heart of it); that gave them their hard earned victory.
The ball is indeed round.
I was too busy defending, so can't really remember the sequence or the goal scorers, but from my vague memory:
Whites: Derian (2), Kelvin (1), Ray (1) and a deflected shot. Reds: Gerard (2), Nick (2), Gow (1), Andy (1) and Sean (1)
The win was thoroughly satisfying and the taste of victory is still lingering... =)
Sean is totally over elaborating on the team selection part and in fact tried to hijack the selection process between me and gerard.
I for one, thought it was a very fair selection. The outcome of the game also turned out that way. Whites were having most of the possession and reds maintained a disciplined back line and rarely let anything slip past them. They used their defence to their advantage and launched quick counters. The strength of marcus, lateral runs from gerard and good hold up play from sean caused confusion in whites defence and they let in some really silly goals.
Whites, on the other end of the pitch, was wasteful in taking their chances. Derian, Daniel and Alex created a hat full of chances which ray failed to put away and that in the end made for the difference in scoreline.
The scoreline was in fact 5-4 for the longest time when last goal was called. Whites had so much possession but couldn't do the most important thing which was to put the ball into the back of the net. It was very reminiscence of Jose mourinho and his breakdown of the United team this season. And also not forgetting the arsenal of 2 years back.
