As there are players making their comeback after a lay-off, I intended to limit the team selector poll to longer term Sunday regulars who have played at least 15 games in the current 6 month period and 40 games over the past 3 years, and have not opted out, but that just leaves us with Damian and Paul, so I suggest we go ahead with them as selectors. In case, of any withdrawals before then please do not post the agreed line ups before noon tomorrow.
What a game!! It was a game of 2 halves with Whites leading and dominating the game at 30 mins but with Reds literally stealing it at FT @ 5-4!!
Reds actually scored first courtesy of a a Vini special first timed half volley diagonally into the goal! Great assist and pass from Babs went directly to Vini who volleyed in the split second before anyone could react. That was a one of the best goals I have seen in Giffa games of late. However some defensive lapses on Red team allowed Whites to steal the ball in Red defence and they went 2-1 ahead. At one point their fast countering tactics took them up to 4-2 but somehow miraculously Reds managed to equalise at 4-4.
Unfortunately, Vini took a bad knock on the ankle right after scoring his second goal and had to sit out the rest of the match. We subbed in Gareth my son to fill the position. Miraculously reds managed to persevere.....credit to my MOTM Babs!!! Whose relentless running and tackling and making space and 140% Spirit enabled the Reds to cling on!!!
There was a penalty for both sides and Reds converted theirs while Whites at the last minute of the game had their penalty saved by Naz!!
Gerard, Fred, Perminder and Babs also made the score sheets....can't recall who scored the other goals.....
Very good workout today with so many runners.....
This is my last match report for awhile ...at least 3 months as I head off to surgery next week.
That was a cool game. Such a pity that my ankle put me out after scoring that first cool goal. I the begging I was worried that the whites would have players with more stamina but we still managed to find forces!
Thanks Damian for the kind words! One of the toughest GIFFA games I have ever played. I was a little concerned at the beginning to learn Reds had to players returning from long/longish term injuries in Foo Cheong & Perminder, I said to Damian before the game that usual practice would be to put one on each side, but he was not aware himself so we just went ahead with it.
I felt Reds started much the brighter side and forced the White back line into continual mistakes my pressing high up the pitch, reds deservedly took the lead with a great team goal involving first time passing with the ball in the air finished with a overhead volley by vini, very Brazilian indeed! It should have been more than 1-0 given the chances and shots coming in by reds, but I was rather wasteful with some wayward shooting.
Some defensive lapses from the red back line who had been in total control at this point allowed Whites to go 2-1 up against the run of play. However Vini made it 2-2 but injured his ankle in the process at the 20 minute mark. It was the end of his game and with the scores at 2-2 we had no choice but to turn to Damian's 12 year old son Gareth to step in. Massive turning point in the momentum of the match. Fred went up top, Gareth to right wing, me in the centre and a mix of FC & Perminder on left mid.
Fatigue set in as we were overworked and overrun, FC & Perm both having to alternate in goal as they struggled with their fitness understandably upon their returns. It meant Damian also couldn't spend as long as he normally likes to in goal. Whites dominated and were 4-2 up and could have been a lot more, it was all a rather desperate situation for Reds. We had to play a direct fast brand of football to create our chances, but really played with spirit esp when bringing it back to 4-3. Once at 4-4 we really had our tails up & spectacularly grabbed the 5th and what proved to be the winning goal, quite unbelievable really! Rainer had a penalty saved late on by Naz which was the last piece of action before time was called.
I think all on the Reds were shattered after. Special mention to Damian's boy, he will be a hell of a player once he's older and put's on the muscle his Dad has, lovely silky player with gifted left foot.
Hope the operation is not too serious Damian, all the best and speedy recovery! Send your son to represent in your stead lol!
