I had a fun time selecting the teams with Andrew. We adopted the 1-2-2-2-2-1 system to ensure that the teams were as balanced as possible and it worked a gem On paper, the sides were balanced......however, the first 30 mins of the game caused me to wonder at the score when Reds raced to a 5-0 lead!!! How could it have gone so wrong!!!
Reds started off really well with Elvin in attack supported by a strong mid of Ben, Kah Boon with David and Paul as sorta wingbacks. Whites were pinned back most times and the odd long ball we managed to get to Jake was effectively cut out or blocked by able Jye, Liren and the defenders. The first goal came from midfield when Elvin drew Stan and Tim with his mazy tenacious run, which left Ben who was unchecked coming in through the middle to blast a goal from outside the D into the goal. In fact, this tactic worked 3 times!!! save for the one time, Kah Boon came down the left wing and provided an immaculate cross for Elvin for the simple tap-in. 3-0....that easily!
Reds scored another 2 to make it 5 before a change of positions and strategy for the Whites started to expose signs of weakness in Reds.....we swapped Anthony to replace hardworking Kelvin in the center-mid position, releasing Kelvin to do what he does best on the left wing attack position. Anthony did really well there in the physical contests with Ben and also being able to hold the ball for runners to get into front positions in the Reds D. Then Kelvin, Joshua and Dom were able to get into scoring positions! A pity that Whites failed to covert quite a no. of good chances hitting the ball wide or straight to the goalie otherwise we could sing an Amazing Comeback song!!! Nonetheless Whites launched a strong comeback to score 4 in a row to make it 5-4!! Apart from Joshua's goal (which some claimed was handballed into the goal- i dont know couldnt see from the other end of the pitch) good goals scored by Anthony and Kelvin or was it Dom?
Alas, @ 6.10pm while Whites were trying hard for the equaliser, we experienced a pitch-invasion by none other than the groundsman who was going to move the goalpost. Stan tried to physically block him hahahahah and that bought us another 2 mins.
